Hydrovac Excavation: The Safer Way to Dig Around Utilities

Conventional excavation around buried utilities is a calculated risk. A bucket on an excavator can hit a gas line, a fiber bundle, or a 12-inch water main with equal indifference. Hydrovac excavation removes the risk by replacing the bucket with high-pressure water and a vacuum hose. The result is a precise, non-destructive way to expose underground infrastructure without damaging it. How Hydrovac Excavation Works

A hydrovac truck pairs two systems. The first is a high-pressure water lance that the operator uses to cut into the soil, breaking it up into a slurry. The water pressure is high enough to excavate clay, granular fills, and most engineered backfill, but low enough that it will not damage the surface of a pipe, conduit, or cable. The second system is a vacuum, typically rated at 3,500 to 5,000 cubic feet per minute, which sucks the slurry up through a large diameter hose and into a tank on the truck. The hole that remains is precisely shaped, with no impact on whatever is buried inside it.

In cold weather or where water freezing is a concern, some trucks use compressed air rather than water, a process called air vacuum excavation. Air excavation is gentler on certain utility coatings but works less efficiently in heavy clay, which describes most of Metro Atlanta. Where Hydrovac Is the Right Tool

Why Atlanta Sites Need It More Than They Used To

Metro Atlanta's underground utility density has grown dramatically over the past two decades. Fiber optic lines have proliferated along nearly every commercial corridor, often installed in shallow plows that are easy to damage. Gas distribution networks have been extended throughout suburban counties, with high-pressure mains running through commercial properties that did not have them 20 years ago. Reclaimed water and force main systems are increasingly common in newer developments. Older neighborhoods often contain abandoned utilities that were never properly mapped, which means even diligent locate requests cannot capture every hazard.

The incremental cost of hydrovac potholing is small compared to the cost of striking a utility, which can run from a few thousand dollars for a damaged irrigation line to seven figures for a major fiber cut that interrupts service to a hospital or data center.

What Hydrovac Costs Versus Conventional Digging

Per cubic yard, hydrovac excavation costs more than conventional mechanical excavation. The truck is expensive, the operator is skilled, and the productivity in clean material is lower than what a competent operator can achieve with a small excavator. Hydrovac wins on total cost when the alternative includes utility strike risk, confined space entry, structural proximity concerns, or restoration costs from disturbed surfaces beyond the work area.

On small, well-defined excavations such as utility potholes, hydrovac is often the cheapest approach overall because the small hole is shaped precisely and the surface restoration is minimal. On large bulk excavations with no utility conflicts, conventional excavation remains the right choice. The judgment call is on the wide middle ground of moderate-volume work in mixed conditions, where the hydrovac premium buys real risk reduction.

Disposal of the Slurry

The slurry collected by the hydrovac truck has to go somewhere. For clean soil, it can often be dewatered on site or at a permitted dewatering facility, with the solids returned for reuse and the water discharged appropriately. For potentially contaminated slurry, such as material from industrial sites or fuel station environments, characterization sampling determines whether the material classifies as solid waste, special waste, or hazardous waste, each with different disposal pathways and costs.

Reputable hydrovac contractors handle disposal documentation as part of the service, and the chain of custody records become part of the project file. Asking about disposal up front is one of the simplest ways to distinguish a competent contractor from a less rigorous one.

When to Call for Hydrovac Service

If your project involves utility daylighting, potholing, excavation in tight corridors, or any situation where conventional digging poses unacceptable risk, hydrovac is usually the right answer.
