CCTV pipe inspection sounds like specialized work, and the equipment is specialized, but the process is more straightforward than most property owners expect. We push a camera through your pipe, record what we see, and deliver a report that tells you exactly what is in there. The difference between guessing at a problem and seeing it directly is usually the difference between spending the right amount on the right repair and spending too much on the wrong one. After running camera inspections across Metro Atlanta for years, here is how the process actually works and what it can and cannot tell you.
What CCTV Inspection Really Is
CCTV stands for closed-circuit television, a term that predates digital video but is still used in the industry. In practice, modern pipe inspection uses high-resolution color cameras mounted on either a push rod for smaller pipes or a self-propelled crawler for larger lines. The camera transmits video to a recorder at the surface, where the operator can mark defects, measure distances, and capture still images of significant features. The output is a digital video file plus a written report that documents every observation by location and severity.
The camera includes lights, distance tracking, and usually a pan-and-tilt head that allows the operator to look into lateral connections without removing the camera. For larger pipes, the crawler tracks include grade and roll sensors so the operator can document changes in slope or pipe orientation that might indicate joint separation or settlement.
Push Cameras Versus Crawler Cameras
For pipes smaller than about 12 inches in diameter, we use push cameras. The camera head is small, the rod is flexible, and the operator advances the camera by hand through a cleanout or open pipe end. Push cameras are quick to deploy, ideal for residential sewer laterals and small storm drains, and limited in reach to roughly 200 to 300 feet depending on pipe geometry and bend angles.
For pipes 12 inches and larger, we use crawler cameras. The crawler is a small wheeled or tracked vehicle that drives itself through the pipe, capable of traveling several hundred feet under its own power. Crawler systems can negotiate larger pipes more reliably, deliver more stable video, and produce more accurate distance measurements. They are the standard for commercial storm drain inspection.
What We Look For
A trained operator is not just watching for obvious holes. The inspection covers a defined list of defect categories, each of which tells you something different about pipe condition and repair priority.
- Cracks and fractures, including longitudinal, circumferential, and spiral patterns
- Joint separation and offset, where adjacent pipe sections have shifted
- Infiltration of groundwater through cracks, joints, or service connections
- Root intrusion at joints and laterals, indicating failed gasket conditions
- Deposits and obstructions including sediment, grease, debris, and intruding objects
- Corrosion patterns on metal pipe, particularly invert wear and crown corrosion
- Deformation, indicating loss of structural integrity in flexible pipe materials
- Connection conditions where laterals or branch lines enter the main pipe
What the Inspection Cannot See
Camera inspection has real limits, and a good operator will tell you what those are. The camera cannot see what is outside the pipe wall, so voids in the surrounding soil are inferred indirectly from features inside the pipe. The camera cannot inspect through standing water reliably, which means heavily silted pipes need to be cleaned before inspection or the report has to flag the obscured sections. The camera cannot evaluate pipe wall thickness directly, although the operator can often infer it from visible corrosion patterns.
For applications where wall thickness or external void detection is critical, supplemental tools come into play. Ground penetrating radar can map voids around the pipe. Ultrasonic thickness gauges can measure wall thickness from inside. Laser profiling can quantify deformation and ovality. These tools are deployed selectively when the camera alone is not sufficient.
Cleaning Before Inspection
Most storm drains need cleaning before they can be inspected effectively. Sediment, debris, and standing water obscure the pipe wall and prevent the camera from documenting defects. We typically run a jetter or vacuum truck through the line first, removing accumulated material so the camera has a clear view. For some inspections, the cleaning itself becomes the deliverable, restoring full flow capacity that had been reduced by years of accumulation.
On long pipe runs, we often clean and inspect in segments, working from a downstream manhole upstream so cleaned material flushes out through structures we have already documented. This sequencing matters more than it sounds, because trying to clean in the wrong direction can carry debris into branch lines and create new problems.
Reading the Report
A good CCTV inspection report includes the video file, a pipe-by-pipe defect log with distances and severity ratings, photographs of significant findings, a pipe condition summary, and a recommended action list. The defect log follows industry coding standards, typically NASSCO PACP for sanitary or MACP for manholes, with similar conventions for storm drain work. The coding allows different inspectors and different firms to compare findings consistently over time.
Property managers who run inspections on a multi-year cycle benefit most from this consistency. The current year's defects can be compared directly to prior reports, and slow-developing problems show up as progressive severity ratings rather than sudden discoveries.
When CCTV Inspection Pays For Itself
Camera inspection earns its keep most clearly in three situations. The first is diagnosing an active problem, such as recurring backups, surface settlement, or unexplained discharge. The second is documenting condition before a real estate transaction or capital planning cycle, where the inspection becomes an asset record that supports investment decisions. The third is periodic monitoring on aging systems, where regular inspection catches developing problems early enough to address proactively.
